Books by David Gans

Author David Gans

David began his career as a music journalist in 1976 at BAM, The California Music Magazine. He was a Contributing Editor for many years. He later served as Senior Editor (West Coast) of Record (published by Rolling Stone) from 1981 to 1986, and Music Editor of Mix: the Recording Industry Magazine. He freelanced to various other music publications until the publication of his first book, Playing in the Band: An Oral and Visual Portrait of the Grateful Dead (with Peter Simon, published by St Martin’s Press). An appearance on The KFOG Deadhead Hour in the spring of 1985 led to David becoming the host and producer of that show, which morphed into the nationally-syndicated Grateful Dead Hour, which he continues to produce and host. Conversations with the Dead was first published by Citadel Underground in 1991, and an expanded edition was published by Da Capo in 2003. After Jerry Garcia’s death in 1995, Gans was asked to compile Not Fade Away: The Online World Remembers Jerry Garcia, a compilation of tributes posted by friends and fans (Thunder’s Mouth Press). His most recent book is This Is All a Dream We Dreamed: An Oral History of the Grateful Dead (with Blair Jackson), published in hardcover in November 2015 and in paperback in November 2016 by Flatiron Books.
